Background: I am an electrical engineer by education but woodworking has always been my passion. I am a self-taught woodworker who has enhanced his learning through reading (charter subscriber to Fine Woodworking Magazine) and attending classes at:

North Bennet Street School Various classes

Connecticut Valley School of Woodworking.
Complex Moldings (i.e., Swan’s Neck) (3 day)

Shop summary:  I have a fairly well equipped basement shop with both woodworking hand tools and machinery. My machinery includes: 10” UniSaw, 10” radial arm saw, 3HP router table, 3 HP shaper, 6” jointer, 16” lathe, W&H molding machine, 9” spindle sander, 14” bandsaw, 15” planer, 8” variable speed grinder, 12” disk sander, full size drill press, 1⁄2” chisel mortiser, 10” sliding miter saw, 3HP, 11CFM air compressor, pressure pot fed prof. spray gun

Areas of interest: Interested in: All skill levels- beginner, intermediate, and advanced. Projects requiring problem solving. Designing and creating jigs and fixtures (particularly those that can be used on multiple projects). Prefer traditional style (e.g., Queen Anne) furniture. Designing my own projects using my CAD program as opposed to working from someone else’s plans (though I have done that too.)

Recent projects include sculpted parts (e.g., cabriole legs). I dye and spray finish most of my projects. (I view finishing, like sanding, as a necessary evil.) Projects include end tables, dining tables, serpentine front table, bookcases, bathroom and kitchen cabinets, chairs, turned projects (e.g., coat tree), breakdown furniture, beds, night stands, bureau, shop fixtures, mirrors, built-ins, fireplace mantels.

I had read articles and seen videos on making cabriole legs but never felt confident enough to try them myself. After three mornings in John's shop I had built a prototype and was able to build this desk for my daughter.
