Background: 30 years as an avid hobbyist, I design what I build and it is usually heavily influenced by Shaker and/or Arts and Crafts styles. I've built beds, tables, cabinets, bathroom and kitchen cabinetry, jewelry boxes, chairs, hand planes and other tools. I usually build a 3D model with TurboCAD and generate working drawings from the model. I mostly work with local hardwoods selecting color and grain as I see appropriate to the project at hand. My finishes range from wiped on oils to sprayed waterbourne's. I use a combination of hand and power tools in my work as I strive for high precision with some degree of time effiecency. I took an interest in wood turning about 8 years ago. I turn spindles for furniture, bowls, boxes, pens, and assorted other small items
Shop summary: Well equiped detached shop with dust collection, 2 lathes, 2 cabinet saws, bandsaw, drill press, slot mortiser, router table, 15" planer, 8" jointer, sanders, miter saw and lots of hand tools
Areas of interest: Turning (bowls, boxes, spindles, hollow forms), furniture making, design, CAD, finishing, plane making, hand tools, materials selection and layout, joinery, power tool tuning and maintainence, sharpening, bent laminations
I have taught classes on wooden plane making (Krenov style) which makes heavy use of hand tools and sharpening. I've also worked with aspiring bowl turners helping them improve their skills.
